Electric Bicycle Conversion Kit
You can buy an electric bicycle but it's becoming more and more popular for people to actually convert their existing bicycles to electric assisted models.
Most bicycle conversion kits sold today are fairly simple to install but there are a few caveats. First, you need to understand that the kits are designed to be as flexible as possible so they will fit as many different types and models of bicycles possible. The result can be a kit that will install okay but obviously not look like a custom kit designed for your specific bike.
Installation is not that difficult but you will need a decent set of wrenches, socket sets, allen wrenches, etc. To really neaten up the install you can use some zip ties to secure the cables, etc. so they not only look better but are more secure too.
The battery on most conversion kits mounts in a box that sets behind the seat on top of the rear fender. Just be aware that the more powerful the kit you buy, the heavier the battery will be. For a standard 1/2hp conversion kit (500 watts) the weight will not be that big a deal but you will be able to feel the extra weight since it sets so high above the center of gravity of the bike.
Also, you should know that the manufacturers are, shall we say, 'generous' when it comes to stating how far and how fast the conversion kits will be. It's akin the auto manufacturers and the advertised mileage for their vehicles. We all know that we will not be able to achieve the claims, and with electric bicycle conversion kits, the situation is about the same.
A big factor in determining exactly how far and how fast the converted kit will go, is determined by the weight of the rider. If you are in the 200 pound range, then you can expect the actual performance to the manufactures stated specs will be off by quite a bit.
Obviously, the number and grade of the hills you will climbing on your bike can have a really dramatic effect on the range. If you have fairly steep hills to climb then your actual battery performance may be off by 50% or more.
Electric Bike conversion kits typically include the battery, the wheel and hub containing the electric motor, the battery box and the associated cables. When comparing conversion kits be sure to look at the warranty by the manufacturer and check into how the warrant claims are handled. You really don't want to have to send the parts to some other country in order to get replacement parts.
With all the stress on the electric hub you will have to be fairly vigilant in your maintenance schedule. It is very important to service the hub and other parts as recommended by the manufacturer.
After you have everything installed you may be pleasantly surprised at just how fast 15mph can feel when you aren't pedaling.
You will probably find quite a few different models of electric bicycle conversion kits. Take your time and find the kit that best suites your needs. Purchasing a bike conversion kit that has a lot more power than you will use will be a waste of money. Of course, on the flip side, you don't want to go to all the trouble of installing an electric bicycle conversion kit only to find that you should have bought one with more power.
